Angels and Demons
English 400 Capstone, Fall 2020
Angels and Demons: what do we know about them? We have been told many stories depicting both of these fascinating creatures, yet we want more. We need more. We are drawn to the unknowing; the unimaginable. That is just what we, as an English class, felt when determining what capstone to take. We were all drawn to learn about angels and demons, light and dark, good and bad. The opposition of these beings makes for extremely intriguing plot lines, no matter what the story may be. Film, television, novels, and short stories have all been jumping-off points to gather our own perspectives on the matter at hand. Going forth, we, as students in this class, have all made it known that angelic and demonic beings spark interest no matter the medium. We found that the use of angels and demons can lead to: questions of doubt, examples of hypocrisy, the portrayal of needed balancing forces at work, a journey of repentance and thoughts on the afterlife, and explorations of free will. They can mean a lot of different things and bring up many important themes and allegories in a text. They are a classic dichotomy referenced regularly in our culture. They may even walk among us... they may have even helped in the writing of this website.
"Why are we talking about this good and evil? They're just names for sides. We know that."
Neil Gaiman, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch.
